Periodontics at Madigan Dental

Gum disease chartDo you think that as you age, your oral health decreases? We want you to know that it’s possible to keep your teeth and gums healthy well into your golden years. The team at Madigan Dental is here to assist you in having great oral health for life.

If your gums require special care, we can provide periodontal treatments including scaling and root planing and bone grafting. With these solutions, our goal is to restore your gum health. If left untreated, gum disease can spread into the teeth and underlying bone, resulting in your teeth shifting out of place and eventual tooth loss.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection in your gums. It occurs when you don’t stay on top of brushing, flossing and having your regular dental checkups. The bacteria and toxins that plaque produces invade your gums, infecting these delicate tissues.

There are two stages of gum disease. The first is called gingivitis and is reversible. The second is periodontal disease, which cannot be cured. Your only option is to manage your condition. The signs that you may have gum disease include

  • Bleeding when you brush or floss
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Pain when chewing
  • Swollen, red gums
  • Tooth sensitivity

If you have gum disease, you may benefit from having scaling and root planing. During this procedure, we carefully clean around the gums and teeth. Pockets form around your teeth as the gums pull away, where pus and bacteria gather. These areas are cleansed and the root of your tooth smoothed out so that it can reattach to the gums.

You may only require one procedure. Some others, however, may require repeated cleanings. We’ll let you know what to expect at your consultation with us.

If your gum disease has gone untreated for some time, you may face the loss of some of the bone in your jaw. Since this bone holds your teeth in place, you may want to have a bone graft completed. If so, we can complete this procedure in-house. With a bone graft, you’ll be able to grow more bone material to make up for what the gum disease has destroyed.
