Illustration of inlays and onlaysAt Madigan Dental, your entire family is welcome. We provide the comprehensive dental care that will keep your smile healthy. All ages can be seen at our office. If you have a concern about tooth decay, you may be interested in restorative dentistry options called inlays or onlays.

A tooth can be damaged from decay that is too large of an area to receive a filling. You don’t, however, require the full coverage of a dental crown. In such a case, an inlay or onlay may be ideal for you. An inlay or onlay is also called an indirect filling. It is created in our dental laboratory, then bonded onto your tooth.

Dental Inlays

If you have had tooth decay affecting only the area of your tooth inside the cusps, an inlay may be the right choice. The cusps of your teeth are the pointy, raised areas on the edges. An inlay will fit right in between the cusps. It can be created of ceramic, porcelain or composite. In years past, metals were a common material used, though it is not used often now due to having more aesthetically pleasing options available.

When an inlay is bonded to your tooth, it covers the damaged area. Your tooth may have greater strength and stability with an inlay applied.

Dental Onlays

An onlay is similar to an inlay but is larger. It extends to the cusps of your teeth, covering the entire chewing surface of a tooth. Our patients usually prefer to have tooth-colored inlays that are made of ceramic, porcelain or composite. When an onlay is bonded to your tooth, it may allow you to enjoy the full function of a strong, vital tooth.

What to Expect When Getting an Inlay or Onlay

We’ll numb the tooth and the area around it as the first step. Then, we can remove the decay from the tooth so that it isn’t able to spread or progress further. Impressions are taken of your tooth, which are used at our local laboratory to create your inlay or onlay. You’ll receive a temporary restoration to wear until yours is prepared.

Upon your return, we’ll remove your temporary restoration and bond your inlay or onlay into place.
